Cirrhosis of the liver is a late stage of scarring (fibrosis) of the liver that’s caused by many different factors. Cirrhosis of the liver can also be present with no physical symptoms at all. We can discuss a bit further in the post at when this may come into play during the life insurance application process.
We are now aware that life insurance with cirrhosis of the liver is possible, but we also are aware that it depends on the root cause and what is taking place. You see, cirrhosis of the liver is usually a gradual process where scar tissue is slowly overtaking your healthy liver cells and causing damage, but situations do exist where we can still obtain affordable life insurance with cirrhosis of the liver.
The Life Insurance Medical Exam and Understanding the Cirrhosis
Regardless of if you inform your life insurance agent of the cirrhosis and what’s taking place, you will still need to complete the medical exam for the life insurance company. Don’t worry it’s free and not all that painful of an experience.
During this exam, you will have a blood draw that will allow the life insurance company to see your liver function test and corresponding results that will enable underwriters to make a judgment call on the actual severity of the cirrhosis of the liver. These tests are known as liver enzyme test. They will help tell the story along with all the helpful information you will provide to the life insurance agent.
Other Considerations the Underwriter and Life Insurance Company Will Want to Know
The blood test is done but that doesn’t conclude the information needed if you truly want to gain life insurance coverage and protect your family. Also, the life insurance company and underwriter will want to know the following items,
What they Want to Know Part 2- Dealing with Cirrhosis of The Liver.
Keep in mind that all the questions just covered was only pertaining directly to the cirrhosis of the liver. That doesn’t mean you are squeaky clean across the board in other areas so the life insurance company will also want to know,
Why is all of this so important?
The life insurance company needs to be able to paint the clearest picture possible with the situation at hand. They are also going to want doctors notes or even a specialist notes on the case and current state of the cirrhosis. During the review of these notes, the underwriters will also be considering any other major medical issues that pop during the review.
As long as you are straightforward about the condition and have been diligent about treatment and recovery and the outlook is positive, there is still a favorable chance and outlook that you can obtain life insurance after cirrhosis of the liver but it’s also going to depend on other possible root causes which we will cover briefly now.
Life Insurance with Hepatitis and Liver Cirrhosis
If the direct cause of the liver cirrhosis is tied to hepatitis which has since been treated, not gotten out of hand and was handled diligently with good results, your chances of approval for traditional or whole life insurance is excellent. You could also be approved at excellent rates if you fall into this category.
Possible Approval Rating- Standard Rates
Life Insurance with Fatty Liver and Liver Cirrhosis
If your cirrhosis is tied into fatty liver, you may run into further issues attempting to obtain life insurance. This is primarily because fatty liver can be directly linked to alcohol consumption and alcohol abuse. If this is the case, you may still qualify for life insurance at sub-standard rates, but you may also have to consider guaranteed issue life insurance to obtain the protection you need.
Life Insurance After or During Liver Cancer
If your liver cirrhosis is directly tied to liver cancer or liver disease, it’s going to be very tough to obtain traditional life insurance. You will have to go through a waiting period before applying of 5 years or longer, and the notes and doctor’s records regarding cancer would need to have very positive outlooks and prognosis to be considered.
This is another category where you may be forced to consider guaranteed issue life insurance or accidental death life insurance.
Life Insurance with Alcohol Abuse
If your liver cirrhosis is caused by alcohol abuse, it will be nearly impossible to get life insurance coverage unless you have successfully been off alcohol for a period of at least 2 years but preferably up to 5 years. Alcohol abuse scares life insurance companies in most circumstances because of so many unknowns.
Do you drive or have other lifestyle habits that could potentially be hazardous? Everything comes into play when considering life insurance with alcohol abuse. If you, however, have been clean for a decent period, chances are you can gain approval and at fair rates. In most circumstances, you will be looking at substandard rates, but it is possible to obtain standard rates if you fall into this category.
Potential Rates and Finding Affordable Rates with Liver Cirrhosis
This varies to greatly to give you a perfect number on what the rates may be but know that it’s going to depend significantly on the direct cause we discussed previously and how the current status of the condition is currently doing.
Again, it’s going to be very tough in some of the situations to obtain life insurance with liver cirrhosis and with other conditions, it’s going to be easy.
Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance with Cirrhosis of the Liver
This is always an option regardless of your condition and why you have cirrhosis of the liver. If you are between the ages of 50-85, you can qualify for guaranteed issue coverage. These will have no medical questions attached to them.
In exchange you will have a two-year waiting period in which if death does occur you would only be afforded your premiums returned plus 10% interest accumulation. Guaranteed issue life insurance makes for a great remedy for individuals seeking 25,000 or less in coverage and final expenses they need taken care to relieve the burden for their family.
Accidental Death Life Insurance with Cirrhosis of The Liver
Let’s assume you fall into the category where you need guaranteed issue life insurance, but you aren’t between the ages of 50-85. If this is the case, you need to lean towards accidental death life insurance. Yes, it’s frustrating that death from natural causes isn’t covered. It does however at least provide your family with some sort of financial security if god forbid was to happen in the future.
Some coverage is better than no coverage no at all. Also, If you’re in a position where your condition may improve over time, accidental death or guaranteed issue life insurance could just be a temporary plan for you until you can re-apply for traditional life insurance in the future.
Point being, don’t leave your family unprotected and with the possibility of financial struggle when at least 1 option always exists to get you covered in the event the unexpected finally does come knocking on your doorstep.
